What is Crumble?
Crumble is a form of BHO (Butane Hash Oil) also known as Honeycomb. This wax begins production much like shatter but is purged for a long time at low temperatures in a vacuum oven, and whipped during the purging period. As a result Honeycomb has softer consistency, yet is still brittle enough to crumble in your hand. Like other cannabis concentrates, crumble is much more potent than flower, kief or hash.
How It’s Made
Honeycomb starts off its live in a manner very similar to shatter. The THC is rinsed from high tricomb buds to separate them from the rest of the plant using a solvent like butane. The butane is then purged with heat and a vacuume. The essential oil extracted from these materials is highly concentrated and contains very high amounts of THC. Non-transparent extracts like crumble (which can be seen as a form of wax) are whipped during manufacturing which causes the solids, such as THC, to separate from the liquid elements like terpenes.
After an extracted cannabis oil is purged of the solvent used in the process, you will typically be left with oil that is much like shatter. Agitating this oil by “whipping” can change its consistency to wax. Creating wax is a bit of an art and each cook can put their own spin on this custom wax by either:
- Raising the temperature by another 20-30 degrees while under vacuum, after the solvent is purged
- “Whipping” the purged oil, then place it back under vacuum at the same temperature it was when purged.
- after “whipping” the purged oil leaving it to set as is.
The texture of the original oil dictates the final consistency of the wax. Hard brittle oil without being agitated results in shatter. Oil that has been agitated can produce either soft textured extracts with a buttery type of end product, a waxy yellowish goo, or a harder extract with a porous crumbly interior. This crumble resembles a delicious cookie in its bulk form when done. The cross section bares uncanny resemblance to the honeycomb of a bee hive that produces honey.
Cannabis concentrates made for vaporizing or dabbing are characterized by their textures and named accordingly.
